Indonesia aims to become cultural heart of the world
Mimi Hudoyo, Jogjakarta, December 9, 2010

INDONESIA has set its sights on being the world's cultural centre even as it works towards hosting the World Cultural Forum (WCF) in Bali in 2012.

The World Conference on Culture, Education and Science 2010, which concluded yesterday in Jogjakarta, was a stepping stone towards the WCF. An international cultural conference will also be held in Riau province next year in preparation.

Prominent tourism figure and Indonesia's former Minister of Tourism, Post and Telecommunications Joop Ave said the country had shown the world that it could solve complex problems, such as developing workable solutions for Aceh, Ambon and the Moluccas.

Indonesia, with its diverse cultures spread across 17,000 islands, had learnt to live together as one nation, he added.

“It shows that we have something important to offer other parts of the world in dealing with seemingly intractable social, political and cultural problems.”

Ave said the goal was for WCF to become as central in the discussion of global cultural issues as the World Economic Forum in Davos in the arena of economics.

“This forum will have a permanent site here in Indonesia and will convene regularly to seek solutions to global issues in culture.”
