I am woman, hear me roar
Adam Tan, Stiletto Central, May 18, 2012

IT SEEMS that the travel and hospitality industry has finally decided to embrace its feminine side, judging from the emergence of more gender-differentiated (read: female) offerings in recent years.

Besides women-only hotel floors and girlie getaways, travel firms catering only to the XX-chromosome half of the human race have been popping up faster than you can say ‘shopping’.

These travel companies brandish catchy names such as Wanderlust & Lipstick, Adventurous Wench, WanderWoman, and Adventure Women. All appeal to a woman’s desire to strike out and experience the world on her own...if but for once in a lifetime.

Now, the latest to join the estrogen-only bandwagon are two Singaporean mommies-turned-entrepreneurs, Tay Lay Suan and Anna Koh, who have linked arms to set up Stilettos Travel (TTG Asia e-Daily, May 11, 2012).

The fledgling travel firm organises guided exploratory sojourns to off-the-beaten-track destinations like Bhutan and Mongolia.

The caveat? Stilettos' programmes are strictly for females only (if you pack a sausage in your pants, don't even bother to apply), and give moms ample opportunity to indulge in a period of well-deserved 'me-time' with other like-minded women, away from their husbands and kids.

But let's take a moment to look at the bigger picture. I'm definitely all for gender equality (I had better be...the last time TTG Asia Media had a male group editor was way back in 1996!), but isn’t it high time that some bloke/s out there rolled out a travel company catering to the XY half of the population??

Imagine how easy it would be to coddle together the perfect itinerary for the He-Men among us.

Let me give you a sure-win suggestion: ample servings of ice-cold beer, and an early-morning reservation slot for an entire movie theatre (preferably widescreen) to watch the upcoming Chelsea-Bayern Munich Champions League showdown.

And let's not forget to book enough taxis to take us home afterwards (it's okay, our own comfy beds are five-star enough).

Easy peasy, right?

I specialise in women only travel to India, both as a tour leader for one of those companies you mentioned and also offer an itinerary design service. Women travel in a much more senstive manner than men, I feel. They are much more interested in culture and art and also know exactly what they want, especially with a little probing.
