AirAsia ponders travel agent tie-ups in emerging markets

AIRASIA is looking at ways of tweaking its highly successful B2C model and is considering engaging travel consultants as part of its distribution network – especially in less developed markets such as Indonesia and the Philippines.

 

According to AirAsia Indonesia president director, Dharmadi, AirAsia Indonesia is considering introducing a commission structure for travel consultants. “We are discussing this internally,” he said.

 

AirAsia group CEO, Tony Fernandes, said: “(Travel consultants) are a very important growth (channel) for AirAsia. They should not consider us as the enemy.”

 

“We will make some exciting announcements (with regards to increased cooperation with travel trade) in the coming months.”

 

As for Malaysia, its home country, AirAsia is quite content with its existing distribution channels – 95 per cent of its business comes from seats purchased directly by consumers on the AirAsia website.

if at all Air Asia is planning to come up with a commission structure to travel consultants, then they should also be introduced in Malaysia as we are also travel consultant, as what Tony Fernandez said \" They should not consider us a enemy \", We also want to feel the great feeling too, as without travel consultant travel industry wouldn\'t be what it is today ! Commission structure for travel consultant by low cost carrier \" is not new \", Jet Star & Pacific Blue (now known as Virgin Australia ) if i\'m not mistaken, offers commission to travel consultant, this is based on my working experience while working for one of the biggest Travel Company in New Zealand as a travel consultant. End of the day what is the need of the industry for sidelining travel consultants ? From Airlines to Hoteliers are doing so, the payment policy have changed so much and barely there is any flexibility for airlines neither hotel. Example: Every consultant have his/her own ways of selling any travel products, but we will try our best to sell the product which gives more benefit to us rather than the one has no benefit. If there is no travel consultant, is all airlines and hoteliers ready to open their own sales office or any future plan to increase their sales personnel to accommodate the demand? Globally everyone is very much in cost effectiveness, so letting the travel consultant be as what they were or used to be is not going effect any one in Airlines or Hotel industry. The move which was taken by the major player in the industry globally is not going benefit any of them in a long term basis. This is my personal point of view and it is not meant for anyone specifically in the Airlines or Hotel Industry personally.
